2018 update

 In Blog

It has been a busy year at the farm   This spring we planted a new field of christmas trees and replaced trees in the existing field that were harvested or were not going to make it.   It was a very tough growing season with record rainfall in the spring contributing to higher than expected transpant mortality.  This was consistent with other local nursery growers. It is discouraging but like they say “there is always next year”.   We planted an acre of asparagus that has done very well and we are anticipating an intial harvest of fresh asparagus starting in May 2019.

This year also saw the demolition of the old red shed and replaced with a brand new agricultural pole building.    This building will serve dual functions.  First, it is our machine storage for the farm.   In the spring it will also function as our asparagus processing and sales space as it was built to USDA GAP standards.   In the late fall it will serve as our Christmas sales shop where wreaths and garland will be made and displayed along with a nice warm place to stop for some hot chocolate or cider after selecting a Christmas Tree.   This was so needed and we are very excited.

Diana and I also attended 2 days of seminars, vendor interactions, and farm tours at the 2018 Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Summer Convention.  There is always much to learn and its great to interact and discuss problems and ideas with other growers.  Before the Christmas season push begins we will also be visiting some asparagus growers and equipment manufacturers in France.   We are hopeful to bring back some new insight and possibly some new processing equipment.

Looking forward to a fun filled Christmas tree sales season and seeing many of our returning customers.
